Nintendo Reveals The Wii U’s Final Controller Design

Today, via a Nintendo Direct video, Satoru Iwata revealed the final design for the Wii U’s tablet controller and gave the device a name, the “Wii U Gamepad” (a name reminiscent of the NES gamepad). The design matches that of a supposed one from a leaked photo that was released a couple weeks back.

The Wii U Gamepad loses the dual sliders that it had during last year’s E3 in favor of two traditional analog sticks, reportedly to gain third-party support by adding a clicking feature which allows for easier multi-platform titles. The start and select buttons have also been moved from the bottom of the Gamepad to the right of the touch-screen, to allow for easier reach.

Mr. Iwata also revealed that the Wii U Gamepad allows for Near Field Communications, which allows for cards, figurines, and other specific items to be placed on the Gamepad to alter the gaming experience. He also revealed that the square button located on the lower-right of the Gamepad is the TV Control button, which allows for you to transfer the image on your television to your Gamepad screen, as well as use the Gamepad as a remote control for your TV.

There are many questions still about the final Gamepad product, most of which will hopefully be answered at Nintendo’s E3 press conference on Tuesday. You can watch Nintendo’s conference here on June 5th at 9:00 AM PST, and be sure to check back to VGN for all more updates on the Wii U and E3.
